Comon sense from a U.S. Congressman... who'da thunk it?

Cuellar Wants More Aid to Mexico By: SCOTT SHAFFER, Laredo Morning Times 05/08/2006 The U.S. is addressing the symptoms, not root causes, of illegal immigration from Mexico, according to U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar. "I would like to try to push next year for increased aid to Mexico for development of its infrastructure," Cuellar told attendees during a Monday meeting of the International Good Neighbor Council. Historically the U.S. has given only small amounts of foreign aid to Mexico to help it create more jobs, the congressman said. "It is in our direct national interest to give increased foreign aid to Central and South America. We will benefit much more if we invest in our own backyard," Cuellar told an audience of approximately 50 IGNC members and guests. The congressman emphasized backyard investment should not include building a $2-$8 billion "security" wall. "We would be sending the wrong message to Mexico and South America," Cuellar said. "9/11 terrorists came in from the north with legal but forged documents, not from the south," Cuellar reminded his audience. Cuellar suggested a three-point approach to addressing immigration issues: - improving border security; - developing improved control systems to expedite legal entry of workers; - generating realistic proposals for dealing with the 11.5 to 12 million undocumented immigrants currently in the United States.
